A pendulum is one of those simple magical tools that can become surprisingly useful once you get comfortable with it. You don’t need a fancy crystal pendulum or a huge collection of supplies. A small weight hanging from a chain or cord is enough to help you tune into your intuition and ask questions when you’re feeling unsure.

The real trick is learning how your pendulum communicates with you. Before asking anything important, you need to find out what yes, no, and sometimes maybe look like for you. Once you’ve established those movements, you can use your pendulum for everyday questions, spiritual guidance, energy checks, and those moments when you simply want a straight answer.

Of course, a pendulum isn’t something to rush with. If you’re emotional, frightened, or desperately hoping for one particular answer, it can be harder to get a clear response. Take a breath, settle yourself, hold the pendulum gently, and let the answer come rather than trying to force it.

1. Choose Your Pendulum and Prepare Your Space

Your first step is choosing a pendulum that feels right to you. Crystal pendulums are popular, but you can use wood, metal, glass, stone, or almost anything that feels comfortable in your hand. Don’t worry about finding the “perfect” pendulum. The connection you build with it matters more than how expensive or impressive it looks.

Before your first session, give your pendulum a little attention. Hold it in your hand and allow yourself to become familiar with its weight and movement. Some witches like to cleanse their pendulum before using it, especially if it has been handled by other people. You can place it beside a crystal, pass it through cleansing smoke, leave it under moonlight, or simply hold it and set the intention that it is ready for your work.

Find somewhere quiet where you won’t be constantly interrupted. Sit comfortably and rest your elbow on a table or your knee if that helps keep your arm steady. Hold the chain between your thumb and forefinger, allowing the pendulum to hang freely.

2. Find Out What Yes and No Look Like

This is one of the most important parts of pendulum divination. Your pendulum needs a way to show you its answers.

Hold the pendulum completely still and say something you know to be true, such as, “My name is [your name].” Watch how the pendulum moves. It may swing back and forth, side to side, or move in a circle.

Then ask something you know is false. Again, watch the movement.

You might find that clockwise means yes and counterclockwise means no. Someone else may receive a forward-and-back movement for yes and a side-to-side movement for no. There is no single movement that applies to every witch.

You can also ask, “Show me yes,” and then “Show me no.” Give the pendulum time to respond each time.

If you receive a third movement, such as a diagonal swing or a very small circle, you can use that as maybe, “not yet,” or “unclear.” This can be especially helpful because not every question has a simple yes-or-no answer.

Once you’ve established your signals, test them with several questions whose answers you already know. This gives you a chance to become familiar with your pendulum before asking something that really matters.

3. Ask Clear Questions for a Straight Answer

When using a pendulum, the way you ask your question matters.

Keep questions simple and specific. Instead of asking:

“What is going to happen with my relationship?”

try breaking it down:

“Is this relationship currently good for me?”

Then you can ask another question:

“Is there something important I am not seeing?”

And perhaps:

“Would giving this situation more time be helpful?”

Breaking a complicated situation into smaller questions makes it easier for your pendulum to give a clear response.

It’s also a good idea to avoid asking the same question repeatedly because you don’t like the answer. If your pendulum says no and you immediately ask again hoping for yes, you’re no longer really looking for guidance. You’re looking for permission.

Before beginning, take a few slow breaths and clear your mind. Hold the pendulum still and ask your question out loud or silently. Then wait.

Don’t deliberately swing the pendulum in the direction you want. Let it move on its own.

Sometimes the movement will begin very slowly before becoming stronger. Other times the answer may be almost immediate. Pay attention not only to the direction but also to how the movement feels to you.

4. Use Pendulum Divination for Everyday Guidance

Once you’ve become comfortable with your pendulum, there are plenty of ways to use it.

You can ask simple questions about your day:

  • “Is today a good day to start this project?”
  • “Would it be helpful for me to rest today?”
  • “Should I take this opportunity?”
  • “Is there something I need to pay attention to?”

You can also use your pendulum during spiritual practices. Some witches use one to check the energy of crystals, choose between herbs, decide which tarot deck to use, or determine which area of their spiritual practice needs attention.

A pendulum can also be useful when you’re feeling stuck between two choices. You might place two options in front of you and ask separate questions about each one. For example, if you’re choosing between two paths, ask about each path individually rather than asking, “Which one should I choose?”

This keeps the questions cleaner.

You can even create a small pendulum chart with words such as yes, no, maybe, later, and ask again. Some witches enjoy making their own charts because the symbols and words become part of their personal magical practice.

One important rule is to give yourself space when the answer feels confusing. If the pendulum keeps changing direction, barely moves, or refuses to give a clear response, stop for a while. Sometimes the answer isn’t ready to be revealed. Other times, you may simply need to come back when you’re calmer.

Don’t Force the Answer

The biggest mistake with pendulum work is trying to control the result.

If you desperately want something to happen, it’s very easy to stare at the pendulum and unconsciously encourage it toward the answer you want. Instead, approach your session with curiosity. You aren’t ordering the pendulum to tell you what you want to hear. You’re opening a door for guidance.

Some answers may surprise you. Others may make perfect sense immediately. And occasionally you’ll receive a movement that doesn’t seem to fit any of your signals.

When that happens, don’t panic. Stop, reset your pendulum, and ask again later.

A pendulum is at its most useful when you treat it as a quiet conversation rather than a machine that spits out perfect answers.

Ending Your Pendulum Session

When you’ve finished your pendulum reading, thank your pendulum and gently bring the session to an end. You can hold it still, place it back in its pouch, or leave it somewhere safe until you’re ready to use it again.

It can also be helpful to keep a small record of your questions and answers. Over time, you’ll notice your pendulum’s movements becoming much easier to recognise, and you may start noticing patterns in the questions you ask.

The magic of pendulum work isn’t about getting hundreds of answers every day. It’s about learning to pause, listen, and trust the guidance that comes through. When you need a straight answer, sometimes the simplest magical tool is the one hanging quietly from your fingertips.
